Exemptée de premier tour, Gilis-Coll, 11e mondiale, s'était imposée au deuxième tour contre l'Égyptienne Nardine Garas (PSA 56). Elle disputait à Manchester son premier tournoi depuis son forfait à l'Open d'Australie début mars à cause d'une blessure à la hanche. Sa sœur Tinne Gilis n'est pas engagée en Angleterre.
