De overwinning was voor Alphonce Simbu. De Tanzaniaan won in de vochtige hitte van de Japanse hoofdstad in 2u09:48. In de laatste rechte lijn ging hij de Duitse Amanal Petros voorbij en hij klopte hem op de meet. Er was een finishfoto nodig om de winnaar te bepalen.

De bronzen medaille ging naar de Italiaan Iliass Aouani in 2u09:53.
